Notes on English Levels and Skills

  • English has four main skills:

Reading – understanding written texts

Listening – understanding spoken English

Writing – expressing ideas in writing

Speaking – speaking fluently and accurately

  • Your level can differ for each skill. For example:

Reading: B2, Speaking: B1, Writing: A2

or all skills may be at the same level.

Knowing your level in each skill helps you choose the right courses and focus on improving your weaker areas.

  • CEFR Levels Explained

A2 (Elementary) – Can understand and use basic phrases and communicate in simple situations.

B1 (Intermediate) – Can handle everyday conversations and understand the main points of clear standard input.

B2 (Upper-Intermediate) – Can understand complex texts and communicate fluently on a variety of topics.

C1 (Advanced) – Can use English effectively in academic and professional contexts with few errors.

C2 (Proficient) – Can understand virtually everything heard or read and express ideas fluently and precisely.
